The Serial Resolutionist.
"This is where the world ends. This is it. This is the last day of the year.
I will be a new person starting tomorrow. This is where the world ends and begins anew tomorrow"
*eye roll*
I try not to judge when someone talks to me about their "New year, New Me!", resolutions. But it's just so hard not to. It really is. I've tried to understand the hype behind new year's resolutions. I have also been guilty of making a few myself a long time ago. I'm glad I stopped making new year's resolutions because honestly, it's like throwing an egg from a two storey building and praying that the egg doesn't splatter all over the pavement below! Doomed right from the start. Almost like Romeo and Juliet or me and Math. Just never really meant to be.
I'm a lot of things, but I'm not a serial resolutionist. I don't think resolutions work simply because anything decided in the sheer hope that "I will begin tomorrow", never works. I read somewhere that, 'Tomorrow is a magical land, where nothing ever gets done'. I believe it wholeheartedly. When someone tells me "I'll call you tomorrow", I know for a fact that they will most certainly not call me from that magical land.
When you can't follow through with a promise of a phone call tomorrow, why in the hell would you decide to change your whole life as soon as the clock strikes 12 on December 31st? Why wait until the end of a year to feel like you can change your life? If you really wanted to make a change, why not start right now?
Change is a scary thing for most people, maybe that's why people wait until the end of a year to declare that they want to change, because anything said in a drunken stupor need not be taken seriously. Change can take a vacation between December 31st and January 1st. And anything said between these two days doesn't count. Just like when you eat dessert on weekends because those calories don't really count.
This whole year has been about 'change' for me personally. Some changes I made consciously, while others were thrown at me out of the blue and I had to adjust my expectations accordingly. But there was change alright. I never really thought that I'd start something of my own or that I'd devote so much of my time to writing, but here I am, writing every day for a living. This was not done on a whim or as part of some resolution. And I think it only worked because it was not a resolution.
I'm sure there's a rare breed of people who actually follow through with their new year resolutions. I'm yet to meet these people, but I'm sure they exist somewhere in the world. I get the symbolism of a resolution and the end of the year and all that, but what I don't get is, why decide to do that amazing life-changing thing at the end of the year, when you can just as easily, do it right now?
Don't wait for the right moment to make a change because then you'll be waiting forever. There's really no right time to do the things you want to do. Stop being scared that something won't work out. What if it does? Then you can tell yourself "I told you so!", and get on with the life that you've always wanted to live.
Don't wait for people to tell you that you're making the right choice. Don't wait for the clock to strike 12. Go ahead and start living your life the way you want to without "resolutions".
Have a 'resolution free' end of year people!
